[Sasuke hears it, but he is slow coming out of sleep.

He notices first that there is a sound, soft and low and achingly familiar. A voice - Itachi's voice. It is speaking. Speaking to him, saying his name. Itachi is saying his name. The notion is still somewhat thrilling, but more importantly he should really respond.

He should be awake for this, especially since Itachi might need him again.

He should sit up, but he can't quite bring himself to. There is something about Itachi's voice that relaxes him completely. He can only roll his shoulders languidly and make a sound between a sigh and a groan as he opens his eyes. It is mercifully dark, and they adjust right away. He cranes his neck to look over to where his brother's futon lies.

And just like that, everything falls back into place.]

Itachi.

[His voice is subdued. He had known that this was coming, but somehow he had gotten so caught up in - everything, whatever this was, Itachi - that he had not figured out how he ought to feel.]

[Sasuke looks at him and there is something in his voice that is...strange. Itachi can see him clearly, the way he stares. It confuses him and yet...

Didn't you want me to get bigger?

I wanted to be big again.

It's too confusing. It doesn't make any sense. Itachi doesn't realize he's clenching his fingers into his hair until the strain on the strands finally brings him out of his thoughts enough to let go.

He's seven years old. He's twenty-two.

Why does he remember Sasuke being so big? Sasuke is his little brother. He's...]

What happened? Why do I...

[He pauses, unsure how to continue, because he's not sure what thoughts in his mind are true or false, but they all seem to be his own, they all seem to fit somewhere, but no where, and different things he believes could have happened, obviously could not. Itachi is not a child. Why would he remember being a child, or spending time with Sasuke and Kisame and everyone else as if he had been a little boy trapped in a world that did not fit him?]My dreams seem to have been strange ( ... )

[It's eerie, hearing his voice like this. He had adjusted, mentally, to the higher tones of Itachi's younger voice. And to other things as well - to the idea that he was in charge, he was responsible for Itachi.

The older brother.

It was not an altogether unpleasant feeling, really, to play that role for Itachi. It was tiring and nerve-wracking and sometimes outright terrifying, to have so much power over him. But when Itachi was afraid or lonely or in need of comfort, he would come to Sasuke. And when Sasuke spoke, it was Itachi who listened, unconditionally.

Sasuke thinks he might be a little envious of Itachi, now. Noww that things are back to the way they always were, and it's Sasuke looking up at Itachi. It was like reality had been stretched so far that it finally snapped, back to normal. Sasuke still has whiplash.

And Itachi...]

You don't remember.

[Uncertain - nearly a question. Dreams? Is Itachi confused...?]

[Remember? What is Itachi supposed to remember? Did they have something they were supposed to do?

Everything was so confusing. Why was he even in Sasuke's house? Should he be with Kisame and Valeria?

No, Sasuke wouldn't let me stay with them. I'm safer here with him.

Safe? Why would Sasuke think that? Itachi is more than capable of--

"You're a kid."

The images are there, the strange sense of perception, the odd angles of his vision, his voice--but not his voice, so much softer, so much younger--and the image at the front of his mind is Sasuke. His little brother is always there. Sasuke was cooking for him, talking to him, holding him...

"I'm just smaller than you right now."But why...? Why do these images--memories, like Itachi experienced them, felt them, everything jaggedly trying to fit into a broken puzzle--keep vying for his attention. They are what first comes to mind, like the most recent, more available. And he feels a throbbing at the back of his skull as he tries to manage it all and fails ( ... )

[So he does remember, perhaps. But he's confused. Like when they were married off, they woke up disoriented. He just need's reassurance.]

It's -

[fine, he almost says, before he remembers what the fuck is he doing. What the fuck is he doing. Itachi is back to normal. This is not Itachi who played hide and seek with you, who cries in grief and clings to you in fear. Itachi is himself again. This is Itachi who murdered Mother and Father. This is Itachi that told you to run away and cling to life ( ... )
