[Naruto hasn't forgotten his promise to meet his sensei, he's just postponing the inevitable. Because no one see's him the way Iruka-sensei does. No one looks at him and see's past the tough guy attitude or the overly bright smiles the way the man he thinks of as family does. Maybe Kakashi-sensei does, too, but it's hard to read Kakashi-sensei when he's a master of hiding behind more than one type of mask ( ... )

[The instant relief that only lasts for a second comes and goes, like a balloon inflating only to be popped to nonexistence in his chest. Iruka told himself that if Naruto doesn't show up by noon, he would find the boy himself and drag him by the ears if he must.

But here he is, standing next to Iruka and almost his height and yet his shoulder droops more than Iruka's, his face older. The amount of burden Iruka carries on his own shoulders does not hold a candle to Naruto's. This is the boy so few would dare depend on, would dare put their faith on.]

Good morning.

[But Naruto's shoulders are broader than Iruka's own, his back stronger than his own, because Iruka knows that in power, one day, this is the boy who will prove everyone wrong. Iruka has seen it once when Naruto had arrived in Konoha on Kakashi's back and the masses celebrated his return.

Iruka's smile is bright and toothy.]

I was beginning to wonder if I had to come drag you out of bed. Shall we start?

I'm still growing. I need all the sleep I can get.

[Naruto yawns and stretches. The truth is he spent most of the night staring into the dark. Thinking. Trying not to think. And a few hours sleep wasn't a big deal except it had been like that most nights since he'd arrived in Kannagara. He's get a couple of hours sleep each night for about a week and then crash and sleep half a day away.

He manages a smile for his sensei and laces his hands behind his head.]

I'll go easy on you.

[Iruka is already moving a few steps away, putting distance between himself and Naruto, a mock frown and fists resting upon his hipbones.]

Hey, just because I happen to be older than you, that does not mean I'm to be given a handicap.

[Iruka tilts his chin up, eyebrow cocking and digging his heels into the ground.]

If anything, I'll go easy on you!

[Naruto can pretend to be serious even if Iruka's expression makes his own soften and a small smile tugs at his lips. Maybe this is what he needs. A distraction. Something to keep his mind off the past.]

[Blue eyes narrow playfully, as if he's truly serious even though his heart isn't really into going all out and showing off his potential even to the man he respects more than anyone.]
