[ And this, the beginning of war.

There is no rain in the sky.

Nagato has always found it curious -- how even in his home country, the air would always seem to go dry when war began: as if the world were clearing way for what was to come. Opening itself out; removing anything which might take up space -- so that there would be room for metal and room for fires: so the stars could look down upon the conflicts of humans and demi-gods.

The first fire is present -- roaring high, and forming the red half of the long night. Burning outside, like what burns inside of them all.

So he comes to this place at the top of the world (was there not a moment when this phrase referred to some other place? some other time?) to find the fire. To steal a little of the stars, and ignite himself ( ... )

[This is familiar. This ritual. Gathering. And usually in dank places, underground caverns. Konan stands beside Pain, at his right hand. As always. But this time she doesn't cover her face ( ... )

[Deidara doesn’t need to climb mountains or scale to the highest villages to touch the clouds; he is the sky as much as he is the fire and light of an explosion, and wherever he touches the ground it is simply where he comes to rest before taking off once more. And so he touches down easily, with the usual shinobi grace, and yet somehow manages to look as if he would be more comfortable in the sky. Still, his grin is easy and loose on his face, and he moves with the practiced silence of a ninja who no longer needs to think about their footsteps to stand beside Sasori, a partner he has not seen in person since before the man had died ( ... )

[The atmosphere of this place contradicts the severity of the purpose of their meeting.

Clouds that envelop them as if to bring them up and make them one with the sky, stars so bright and so near that should Itachi reach out, he almost thinks he could be burned away by their heat.

It is not the fire of the stars that attracts his attention most, but the crackling and smokey banner of the flames that burn not too far from his position.

And the man who lounges by the fire. The man who he so wishes he could burn into nothing. He wants to forsake his mission--his purpose--all for the chance to kill this man, who could so easily kill him instead. Yet Death would be a welcomed companion in the exhcange if he could take him with him--because he could could barely think clearly when he saw him and all he wants is to burn him away.

But Itachi does not show his true emotions--even though he can feel Amaterasu aching for the chance to fulfill his desires, to scorch the earth and leave nothing left of the man who has taken everything and ( ... )
