As far as kids go, Johan has always been fairly responsible and self-sufficient to some extent, whether he was aware of it or not. Where other kids will cry and whine and refuse to eat if they don't get what they want for dinner, he will get up and do it himself if necessary.

...That doesn't, however, mean he's any more fond of waiting around idly for someone else than any other ten-year-old. Responsibility and patience don't necessarily go hand-in-hand together.

"Are they here yet?" Johan pipes up, trotting down towards Juudai and putting his arms around his waist affectionately in what's almost a running tackle, though one lacking much push. His waist is about as high as he can reach at this point, anyway. "Maybe we could ask Cobalt Eagle to look for them from above!" he suggests into the hem of Juudai's blazer.

The funny part about it is that adult Johan would probably be doing the exact same thing in this situation.

Had Asuka been a normal teenager fresh out of high school, the experience of finding herself lost in a world that was not her own and contacted by people who bore the faces of friends yet who did not share her memories would have been a deeply traumatizing one. Fortunately, however, Asuka was rather proudly abnormal for someone her age, possessing a calm mind able to break down a seemingly overwhelming situation into a number of smaller tasks that could be accomplished through rational thought. The fact that this was not the first time she had found herself whisked away to another dimension also helped ( ... )

The scenery didn't matter a great deal to Ryou, except as a vague way to mark his progress. What interested him much more was the possibility of dueling Johan when he arrived at his destination. He sorted through his deck as he walked, imagining which combos he could use against the famous Gem Beasts.

The strangeness of this world didn't matter to him, not when it gave him opportunities like this. To duel a rare deck and a powerful duelist...to see how much stronger Juudai had become. That intrigued him as well.

He dismissed what both Juudai and Asuka had mentioned about his own health-related future. That hadn't happened and he wasn't going to worry himself about it.

He checked the map again and let a small smile thin his lips. Destination almost achieved.

"Ack!" Juudai had yelped when a tiny Johan barreled into his midsection from behind. He couldn't help laughing a little when he saw him clinging to Juudai's jacket. "We can do that if they don't show up in the next five minutes," he'd promised, failing to resist the urge to ruffle Johan's hair a little. If Juudai had a camera, he'd be taking pictures of this for whenever Johan got back to normal, all right. Actually, maybe the Hitomi had a picture-taking function ( ... )

Even as he tumbled to the ground with the boy he was piggybacking on, Johan quickly scrambled to his feet, turning around and hovering over Juudai's faceplanted form a little curiously.

"Um, are you okay?"

At the same time, though, he kept glancing over his shoulder towards Asuka and Hell Kaiser -- particularly, his attention was fixated on the latter. His opponent. Even as a child, Johan had fairly decent duelist instincts, and he was already very aware of the principles of respecting one's opponent. His connection with spirits had helped teach him that, along with the fact that up until now, he had been the only one he'd ever known who acknowledged the spirits' feelings at all.

Slowly, he took his deck out of his pocket with extreme care, shuffling it almost tenderly in his small hands as he waited. It had only been a few days, but he already felt he connected with this family better than he had with any other spirits -- it almost hurt him to admit it to himself, since he didn't care about any other spirits any less, but none had ( ... )
