[Jessica has been busy rearranging the furniture again, mostly out of boredom really. There's only so much she can do - give blood for profit, taking care of her pet dragon, maybe shop for more things for the new house, and then go to bed for the next night. Sometimes Matt will be up for the night, sometimes he's not. Jessica does feel guilty for fucking up his sleep schedule, and sometimes she wish she could walk in the sun for one day, just to have a normal day and night with him ( ... )

[Matt knows J's invited Mello to stay with them, and he's not sure how he feels about it. It's a clash of his old and new lives, and everything's going to get all tangled up, as happens even when you start with the best of intentions. Matt knows; he fully meant to do the shit Mello needed and leave, back in their world, and look how that turned out.

So. Matt's girlfriend, his... whatever Elfangor is, and Ax right outside, and Matt's best friend, whom he loves, probably, in some way he's not all that interested in examining too closely, all mostly under one roof.

This can only end well, right?

Matt has a cigarette hanging on his lower lip, of course, by the time he pokes his head out to confirm it's Mello who's arrived. They still have shit to sort out, but not in front of J. That'd be a recipe for Mello clamming up. So all Matt says is:] Hey, M.

[A small nod of acknowledgment in Jessica's direction, and Mello is inside like a wayward, vagabond kid. No worldly possessions, not a single bag, nothing but his disheveled state and lack of wanting to converse with anyone, at all. It makes him feel a little awkward, though he would never show it visibly. Like he just came in from the rain, and everyone is looking at him, sopping wet and looking pretty dumb for having gone out there, in the first place.]

Hey.

[At least they've done alright for themselves, he thinks. It could've been so much worse, what with the shit this place throws at people. He closes the door behind him, gives Matt a once-over, and this is all that's required of him, right? Mello's always been shit at appearing grateful. Must have something to do with feeling like something is owed to him, always.]

I won't be here long. [This is his version of "Thanks for having me."] A month, at the most, though I'm aiming for less.

Just take your time. [Jessica feels the need to tell M as she goes over to a chair, sitting down primly. She habitually smooth out the wrinkles of her dress as she crosses her legs. The difficulty with M is that one can't never tell if he prefers to be treated as a stranger or an ally. But now he looks like a wallflower, uncertain on what to do with other people. She wonders what has happened to him when he went back home.] After that monster invasion, the economy has been pretty much trashed. Everyone is still busy rebuilding.

[She gestures toward a crumbled paper, a newsletter of the Yomisato variety. Jessica reads it all the time now, and there's is constant mention of the "great substance from Other Worlds". It brings a smile to her face usually, but something she caught in the other Celestial newsletter on the Hitomi disturbed her, but she's not sure what.]

[Matt can still translate Mello-ese pretty well, and he still feels that kick of sort of affectionate tolerance at the lengths the blond will go to, to preserve his pride. He wonders, not for the first time, if Mello will ever learn to accept help gracefully, and decides, as he has before, that he simply can't see it in any terms other than those of owing someone.]

The room's just sitting empty, [he says, which has the advantage of being true.] You might as well use it.

[He gives Mello a look that he hopes conveys the fact that they need to talk. There are things. Things Matt wants to tell him before he hears them from anyone else, and things Mello needs to fucking spill, already. Matt's used to interpreting his best friend's actions, but he's also out of practice, and he's not sure if Mello coming here is the act of someone with nowhere else to go, or simply him taking advantage of the best opportunity he's been given.]
