HOUSING EVENT
June 15 (Week 7, Day 4)

The world is changing once more.

The gods have decided that it is time the truth about Kannagara is revealed.

At 12:00AM EST Tuesday, June 15, characters who are within the villages will wake up and find themselves not in their beds, but on the street! They will find themselves surrounded by people going about their normal routine, surrounding your character who is taking and staring at your character who is taking up the space and sleeping on the streets! The majority of people will have what appears to be a golden mark of some kind on their foreheads, and they will be whispering amongst themselves at how your character does not have them. How your character is strange and foreign. And how this might be a sign from the gods, as all humans must have "ajna." (Whatever that means.) They might look curious, they might look scandalized, scared, horrified. They may act dubious and usher their children away from your character or prod at your character. Carts and rickshaws might stop, or if they're in a hurry, they might run over your character's limb! Be alert!

To those who are not residing in a village, they might enounter traveling nomads, and they too will stop and stare at your character. They too will have a mark on their foreheads, except these marks are reddish-brown in color. But unlike the villagers, these nomads will simply be curious, and very open and welcoming of your character! They may ask your character questions, and they will certainly prod and poke at your character. Especially at your character's forehead.

What was once an empty village is now bustling with merchants, children, farmers, families, men, women -- it's a thriving and noisy village! Your character is no longer alone!

Your character will also find themselves locked out of their houses. Completely. No amount of struggle or force will enable them to approach the perimieter of their homes. There will be an invisible force field around the entire land your character's house is built on. Throw something at it? It'll most likely bounce back. Elemental forces will neutralize to nothing. Using physical force will only cause your character to bounce back with the same force. In fact, no house in all of Kannagara will be accessible; your character will be completely homeless.

Your character might question this sudden change, and ask around as to why this happening to them. People will answer with a question, surprised, curious, they might laugh or stare at you strangely, ask you questions or try to hurry the conversation along, or even prolong it! But it all comes down to the same thing: has your character paid tribute to the gods yet?

Characters in the villages of Tsuchisato, Kazesato, Raisato, and Mizusato will temporarily find themselves displaced to the closest border within the main continent. Any attempts to cross the border into the village your character's home is located in will result in your character being bounced off a similar force field. For the time being, the only villages your character can freely travel to in this world are Amesato, Kusasato, and Hisato.

All characters are affected by this event. This event cannot be opted out of as it is the catalyst to permanent changes and developments in the game.

Your character will only have one in-game week to try and get their house back. If they cannot manage to pay tribute by this time, or refuse to do so, all of their possessions will be thrown out at the side of the road following this period unless they ask for leniency from the gods, at which point they may receive a week of grace.

How to get your character's house back

1. Your character must make a tribute to the gods at the closest shrine or temple that they can find. Money, food, drink, flowers, burning perfumed incense -- the gods are merciful. Since this is the first time your character is making a tribute, not much is needed. However, in the event your character does have enough, they will need to carry on giving on the days of offering or otherwise they will find themselves locked out of their houses with their belongings thrown out and all over the street. People might actually just pick them up and walk away with them.

2. Money can be obtained by either hunting down animals from the bestiary or your character can try to get a job within the village proper. Stealing is an option but the gods would likely not accept dirty money when your character left another in misery. So be careful! Alternatively, your character can also ask for a loan from the bank or borrow money from a helpful villager.

The cost of monetary tribute

How much tribute your character must pay this first time is determined by the size of your character's house, and what amenities come with the house. Small houses with one bedroom and no onsen or bathhouse on the grounds start at 25 ryo. Each amenity, such as an extra bedroom, or an extra floor, increases the cost of the tribute by 5 ryo. A private onsen costs 10 ryo. So, if your character is in a two bedroom house with two floors and an onsen, as well as a private wall and gate, the tribute would be around 50 ryo.

This is how the cost is broken down:

Base cost of a one bedroom, one-floor house with no bathhouse: 25 ryo
Extra floor: 5 ryo
Extra bedroom: 5 ryo
Onsen: 10 ryo
Private wall/gate: 5 ryo

Total: 50 ryo

Bear in mind that the size of your character's house also matters. The larger the house, the more expensive it will probably be.

Following this initial tribute, all tributes your character makes will be significantly more expensive; it will be up to you how much your character's monthly tribute will be. Just try to be realistic about it! Keep in mind that if your character can't meet the monetary value of tribute, they can supplement the offering with food, drinks, flowers, and burning perfumed incense to appease the gods.

Where to stay while homeless

If your character is unable to secure a sufficient amount of tribute for the gods, if they ask around for a place to stay, the villagers will direct them to a communal housing compound. Here, they can reside temporarily for a total of one-in-game-month in dorm-style housing.

Alternatively, your character might discover Yomisato if they do not wish to live within the Celestial villages. They can either rent a nice place and pay the landlord the required sum, or they can squat in the abandoned ruins or grottoes of the village. This however, leaves them open to harm's way like attacks from yomis or monsters that prowl in the night.

Your character is also free to squat in caves, forest, trees, shrines or they can join a nomadic tribe.

More information will be forthcoming on Yomisato, the Nomads, and the communal housing compound.

If any of you have any suggestions as to how we can improve this event, we are open to making minor alternations to it! Feel free to ask us any questions about the event as well.
