Hope whatever ya were doin' wasn't too important, cause ya ain't gettin' back to it.
Place's called Kannagara. We got dragged here from different worlds by the so-called 'gods' of this place, who also happen to like fuckin' with us.
The thing in yer hand's called a Hitomi. Lets ya talk to other people stuck here, but downside's anything ya dream about gets broadcasted to everyone too. Can't break or lose it either.
[A pause, because half that went straight over Renji's head.]
...This ain't an afterlife
[That's the first thing he can think of to say]
Why we're here, nobody really knows. Heard something about "learning harmony" or some shit, but there are definitely some gods here that'd just as soon try ta kill us as teach us anything.
After a while, ya just learn ta go with the crazy shit that goes on here.
[A fake accent. What an interesting choice. Near pauses for a bit before answering this, considering. It will be easy to confirm his suspicions on the exact identity of this person--though he's already almost certain.]
[ Of everything that's happened, there is a single consistency (or as close to consistent as has been anything here) in the behavioral pattern of the so called "Gods". Persons abducted almost to the one have been joined by another from their specific world.
L himself has been graced with three of his former protégés, and two of his greatest adversaries since his arrival.
This new person. It sounds like...
Hearing Mello's discussion with the new person, and adding the new speaker's concern for safety, the abrupt silence on both he and Mello's part, well. It seems safe enough to assume said person is he who L originally thought him.
L lifts the hitomi, letting it dangle at an ear, speaking casually through a mouthful of cake. ]
[There's a beat of silence--more than a beat, really--as Matt figures out who this must be, which takes about a second, and tries to process it, which takes somewhat longer, even with the fair warning he got from Mello.
It's not that Matt doesn't respect the guy, it's just that he never really caught the hero worship, like Mello most definitely did. And even though he's aware, intellectually and all, that he's dead himself, it's more than weird hearing someone's voice when his death has been a fact of Matt's life for years. So he's not in awe or anything, but before today, he would quite honestly have said he was sure there was never any chance he'd ever talk to L.]

A breath.]
Where are you.
[The words are low. Curt.]

[There's a snap of anger in his voice, now, that all but eradicates the fake accent.]

Just answer the question. I don't have time for this shit.

The who in the what now?
[A pause.]
I'm. I'm Matt. What're we here for? Some kinda fucked-up afterlife? Um, I mean. Social experiment? With a like indestructible iPhone, what the hell?

I've got some experience with that. Going with the crazy, I mean. [His accent comes and goes, depending on whether he remembers he's doing it or not.]
No way out, huh. You been stuck here long?
Reply
Paranoia isn't bad. But you're stuck.
[Another pause, contemplative.]
Was it very important?

Wow, the gang's all here, huh?

What sort of important? You have probably been informed of the problems with time.

When're you from? You might not have gotten to where I came from yet.

You and I come from realities that are either much alike, or the very same.

Do you, um. Could you give me a summary of current events?
