[Of course it would be wrong not to pay attention to Mello's dreams. He has to take any clues that he can get, and in this case it's...oh well, it's a bit awkward, isn't it?
He watches it through once, and is content to set the Hitomi aside rather than deliberately set himself up to experience it. He doesn't need to; it's...well, it speaks for itself.
A stretch, and Light slides out of bed, excusing himself.
He speaks into the Hitomi when he reaches the kitchen.]
I'm making some hot milk--would you like me to bring some in to you?
[It comes out as more of an annoyed grumble than anything. Mello doesn't know Yagami enough to be able to tell whether that was a half-assed attempt at condescension, or if he's genuinely offering.
Even if the latter is the case, it's due to an ulterior motive. Get on Mello's good side, get some of the heat off of his back.]
You know what it was, [he snaps, resisting chucking the Hitomi against the nearest wall.] If I held you responsible for the content of your shit, you would have pretty much proven your guilt.
[ L follows a strict protocol for the observation of dreams. It's simple. Straightforward. A matter of placing the Hitomi within visual range to watch the feeds.
Routinely, he awakens earlier than Light, who sleeps heavily beside him right now. It begins with a review of the Hitomi's contents. Staring at Mello's image with sleep-blurred eyes, it's unsurprising to discover the first of his protégé's dreams.
That L is already lifting the device when the dream floats into his consciousness is surprising.
It is a good while later when L speaks]
I think you're being too hard on yourself. If I were you, I wouldn't worry so much.
[The voice snaps him into awareness, and Mello's face turns sharply toward the Hitomi lying next to him on the bed. He doesn't want to speak, doesn't want to even think about the fact that L, of all fucking people, just saw that.
Ohjesuschrist.
He wants to tell L that he has no fucking clue as to the shit that Mello's done since his death, has no way of knowing the depths to which he's sunk just to get ahead, to get information that would have been otherwise unobtainable, to get the manpower necessary to carry out his plans.
[ L pauses then, deciding between two courses of action. He could insist that Mello wake up to discuss the matter further, or allow him and it to rest.
The dream reveals a good measure of shame inasmuch as Mello's conflicted feelings. About himself, and for him, L. It's best for the boy (how old is he?) for L to avoid interrogation. Let this one go, for all that he's curious. ]
That's good. I apologize for having disturbed your sleep, Mello.
[Really, he has nothing else to say. As far as Mello's concerned, he got off easy. Yeah, he might earn a suspicious look or two from his mentor in the future, but as for right now, the worst part is over.

Would you have preferred that I open with something like 'What the hell was that?'

He won't.]
M'fine. [His voice is gruff, guarded.]
