[Out of all the dreams on the Hitomi network so far besides his own, this is the only one that makes sense. Which is to say, he understands what it is that Byakuya is dreaming of.
And it is the first time he sees it from Byakuya's perspective. It is too easy, sometimes, to forget that the younger captain has emotions and fears and misgivings of his own, that he is not the robotic drone he makes himself out to be.
This dream...it feels like watching Kaien die all over again. Even though he knows it is false, and that it did not end that way...the feeling of helplessness, of weakness...of wanting to protect but not having the strength...

[Ukitake trembles when the dream is over, the Hitomi shaking in his hands. He takes several long, shuddering breaths, trying to collect his thoughts enough for a response.
He experienced this dream as well, but it is not his. And he knows that Byakuya will resent having his privacy disturbed, but Ukitake feels the need to say something, even though comfort is something that he knows Byakuya will utterly reject.
In the end, he isn't sure how he ought to respond, and he settles on something he has been saying a lot with regards to these dreams:]
[He has not forgotten that these things do more than what one wants, but even shinigami must find rest. He cannot stay awake forever, cannot search for an exit without a clear mind.
He does not appreciate Ukitake's concern, does not care for the fact that a weakness has been revealed to someone, that he's allowed something like this to be seen because he knows his senior captain.
It is one thing for a stranger to see, to experience, whatever it is these devices do. It is another for a respected captain, a man he knows and has built a wall against, to see it. It is unacceptable.]
[ voice ] ...Iiiis it weird that I find that icon creepy? XD;pisces_truthFebruary 6 2010, 03:44:53 UTC
[He doesn't sigh at how Byakuya pushes him away, as expected. He isn't going to lecture the man about his pride or anything, or get irritated at his response to an honest effort to help because he already knew what the reaction would be when he spoke. But everyone needed someone, even if Byakuya wouldn't admit it.]
Yes, but it is sometimes nice to have a reassurance, isn't it? [Gently. No judgment in his tone at all.]
I know. [But I'm offering it anyway. He doesn't say that.] But in case you might wish someone to talk to.
[ voice ] xD Creepy how?sakurabitoFebruary 6 2010, 04:00:14 UTC
[It's useless. He does not care to hear of this pity from Ukitake. He has better things that he could be doing, things he would rather be doing. What use are his words of reassurance when he already knows it was nothing but a simple dream?
Just because he has experienced this, against his will, does not mean he wants or appreciates this treatment. He would expect his senior captain to know this.]
[He can't say he doesn't feel bad. But perhaps he understands the act of shielding more than anything.
But he does not touch on the topic of the dream. There is no need to. He is far too familiar with how it feels to have vulnerability out in the open like this. And to have salt poured in to the said wound.]
Ahh, looks like you got your first broadcast out. You should be quite displeased with the gods right about now ...
[There is a lot about that response he could respond to. Probably a thing or two he may, at a later time, correct, but there is something that sticks out a bit more and he's obviously displeased when he responds.]

It is like history, on repeat.]

Are you all right?
[a pause, and then, with some more hesitation]
That isn't the way it happened. You know that.

I know the outcome. I do not need your sympathy.

It is unnecessary. Place your concern elsewhere.

I was only complimenting her blood splatter. I thought it was downright sweet of me!

[Because getting worked up over this is even more useless.]

...Seems like she made a choice.

[His reply is flat, masking his distaste for these strangers intruding on private matters.]

'Displeased'...
This is the game your gods play?

[Iruka makes an amused sound.]
The gods mess around a lot. And believe me, the dreams are probably the least of your problem. Byakuya-san, they're your gods too now.

Where did you hear that name?
