I'm not the best person to say, but what I think what family is to protect and never hurt.

[Unfortunately, Jessica never had that.]

To look out for one another?

Yes. That.

Most important of all.

[Jessica has to wonder why Chrome is asking these questions. It's not her to ask people personal things.]

[ it's just been on her mind a lot lately. Chrome's "Family" -- Mukuro, Ken, Chikusa -- and her other Family (a literal mafia Family, Boss and the other Guardians)... call it one family or call it two or maybe more, but her family is everything to her. and the people here? some of them are a kind of family too, she guesses. but it's funny, because she's not thought of her parents as "family;" not in a long, long time. and here she is thinking of having her own child. with her own blood. what does it earn, what place does it have, for being a byproduct of her. it's all a little confusing sometimes. ]

If even under everything, there's love.

Family ...

I don't -- I can't ever explain well.

[This is not a pleasant question.

Rin can't say it is shocking, or painful, exactly -- but not pleasant. Which, Rin is surprised to notice, is mostly because she hasn't really, truly been thinking about this in a while. Not a long while, but longer than she is used to.

Makes her feel unfilial.

She's also noticing that her definitions have, ever so slightly, shifted. And that is maybe the first time she thinks that Kannagara has really changed her.

Still, the shift is not too dramatic. Just enough to give her a pause.]

Family is incredibly important. It's one of the most important things in the world.

But one should, maybe, not stay too attached forever, at the same time, so that one can let go if one must.

[ she considers. ]

Attachment... do you think it differs?

Among people?

[Ah. And another very interesting question.]

You mean, is the attachment between family and other people different?

I'd say yes. Having a family-like attachment to a person that is not family is possible, but we'd still characterize it as a familial relationship.

[The word "family" should probably mean nothing to Lavi, when he thinks about it. Of course, that depends on what kind of family she's asking about.

If they're talking by blood, Lavi can't recall having one like that. It's a part of a distant past that doesn't matter. If there's anything he's sure of that he believes, that he can think of only like that without it feeling complicated, it's this. That distant part doesn't matter, it's not who he is. He is a Bookman...

And that past doesn't belong to that.

If they're talking in terms of who has raised them, he has Bookman. No doubt, they are family, they see themselves that way, no matter that they're not supposed to form close bonds. What does it matter when it's them? That's their thing, their concern. It's nothing to worry about as long as it doesn't get in the way. And Lavi loves Bookman. He doesn't call him family out loud, but he does call him "gramps", and that's not only a nickname for the sake of annoyance even if it is that too. But because Bookman is his gramps. He's too ( ... )

What each person defines as.

[Okay... That doesn't really make it any easier. But since he has already responded he figures he might as well try to answer. But when you have several definitions...

They do have one thing in common, though.]

I guess any kind would mean I'd do anything for them.

I would, also.

I guess that is what it means. Family.

My family means the world to me. I'd do anything for them.

That's part of why I'm pretty upset about being stuck here. I have a son to take care of; I can't waste my time here.

Yes. My son isn't quite four months old yet...this isn't a good time at all for me to not be at home.

[Fox is maybe playing a bit for sympathy here, but it's honest at least.]

You don't have to worry about your kid. Being here doesn't mean we leave everything behind. Time either stops back home or we're here at the same time we're there.
