Today I went and tried on (again) the wedding dress that almost all of my friends have recommended as the most flattering, best looking wedding dress of my two month hunt.
agreed!! haven't tried a wedding dress on myself, but have experienced many tryings-on when icedaemoness was searching for her dress, and understand the emotion completely!!
you're making the right decision!cyberbelleJanuary 11 2010, 13:59:44 UTC
kick that white dress to the curb!
seriously, though, I think that the bigness/heaviness of industry-standard wedding dresses is really problematic. you wrote that you felt like the dress was wearing you, that the dress made you feel suffocated. i'd feel the same way in one of those: like the role of bride (signified by the massive dress) was more important than myself.
to be restricted in your movement on the day of your wedding: doesn't that seem scary?!? like a bad start? all of a sudden, you need help going pee? on your wedding day? blearg.
the wai ching is fantastic. i give it my blessing!

Cybele, you have hit the nail on the head. It is a role, that you play for one day, and I do believe that it would have taken me over. Not that it would do that for everyone, I'm sure that it's perfect for many women. Just not for me.
And goodness, the practicality of it. I don't want to need help to pee! I want to hike my skirt up of my own accord and go to it!
Thank you again, for all of your well considered comments. You are a treasure.
My expression is telling. I'm actually surprised more people didn't comment on it. To me it says "I'm trying not to show it, but I'm not comfortable or happy." AKA, I'm extremely non-committal.
Thank you! I always meant to respond to your offer to direct me to bay area seamstresses, but I was worried I would go to a seamstress with little other than "I don't want to wear a stiff bride tank-dress" and then be lost.
For that reason I'm happy with the options I have of going with the Wai Ching (a seamstress, though Seattle-based), or the great halter dress from the awesome shop "The Wedding Party", where I got service that was neither insulting nor pressuring. What a relief. :)
Nice! Thank you for your support. I'm thrilled to feel like I figured myself out enough to know the traditional bridal gown, though thrilling in some respects, was not for me. And yes, comfort all the way! Take me as I come, baby!

It's a different Wai Ching than in my first post, when I tried the other one on, I wasn't as thrilled as when I tried this one on. :)
Thank you for the support!

I like it so much better!
And great that it feels so much better, too!

Whether you go with the halter-neck in cream or the Wai Ching, pick a dress that makes YOU happy and comfortable.

Good for you for following your instincts. I often put comfort ahead of tightening/structuring/lifting/separating. :)
