I . . . did not have that reaction at all. I really overall liked it, though I agree that yes, the casefile was rather formulaic. But I think they knew people wouldn't be paying attention to it, so it was understated, and they were giving us so much new stuff (OMG JIM. HE IS AWESOME. RAY AS DI! CHRIS AND SHAZ!) that they didn't want the episode to feel crammed. I really liked Marjorie - she was a strong character, better than the "good-guy-who-seems-shady-but-isn't" husband.
And SAM. SAM SAM SAM. Oh man, I swear I knew it, way back in S1. One of the first things Ray tells Alex is that "Sam didn't listen to the Guv. Look where he ended up." My brain immediately went - "oh shit, something's hinky about that".
It's funny, I missed the first five mins and I think I missed a heap of plot! I shall have to catch it again on iPlayer and rewatch to check...

I'm still trying to wrap my head around it. I wonder if it's a double-bluff - I think it was selenak who was mentioning the possibility of this being another 'validate Gene' misdirection - but I am hoping it's not. I really do want for Gene to have gone wrong somewhere, or for him to be wrong in some way. Although not in a way to make me hate the show, obvs. :)
