That's the little lie about (North) America. Our Free Market isn't exactly "Free". And it hasn't been for a long time now. It's far easier to see in some markets than others, such as how the majority really don't have that much of a choice when it comes to internet service.
You either have cable, or dsl. Normally exactly one company offering either. And often times you'd only have one of the two options anyway.
Consider video game stores. You had ebgames and Gamestop. Until Gamestop bought ebgames and it became a mirror copy. Main competitor down, used prices go up!
Now you have Staples trying to buy Business Depot, claiming it wouldn't be creating a near monopoly situation by absorbing it's primary competitor since people still buy office supplies from ... Amazon. (such a flawed argument I can't even bring myself to type it out again.)
We're pretty much living in an age of hidden monopolies (how many "competitors" are actually owned by the market leader?) duopolies, and so forth.
