First of all, go to the following directory in Windows Explorer and just see what's there: "C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Media Player\Art Cache\LocalMLS"
For me, in the folder was 276,914 files, totaling 10.9 GB. Every one of those files was a small jpg file, apparently corresponding to an album cover of various music files I'd downloaded over the years. Even though all of the files were individually named, there were a lot of repeat images. This was the case even though I *never* use Windows Media Player for anything at all, ever.
So, for me, the first thing to do was to delete all of this crap. However, let me give you a tip to save you some trouble. Don't try to delete all of these files from directly within that LocalMLS folder. For me, the simple act of pressing Ctrl+A to just *select* the files was enough to hang my computer, requiring a manual reboot. (Ctrl+Alt+Delete didn't even work.) What you want to do instead is to go up one level to the "Art Cache" folder, then select and delete the LocalMLS folder itself. When Windows warns you that you are deleting system files, tell it to go ahead and delete them anyway. It took around 15-20 minutes for my computer to delete the folder. After it was gone, I recreated the LocalMLS folder in the Art Cache folder, just in case. Not sure if it was necessary, but I did it anyway.
Next step was to prevent this from happening again. I plugged the "C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Media Player\Art Cache\LocalMLS" folder name into Google and got quite a few results on it, all of which suggested disabling the "Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service".
To disable the "Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service" do the following steps, found here:
https://web.archive.org/web/20100212185632/http://www.mydigitallife.info/2010/01/27/how-to-disable-windows-7-media-player-network-sharing-service-wmpnetwk/ (Which I found via here:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_programs/windows-7-keeps-on-writing-thousands-of-jpg-files/5c263f66-472d-4c1c-99d9-be8fc18ebea8 though I had to use archive.org to find a saved copy of the site since the original was no longer there.)
The gist is to open up services.msc (typing "services.msc" into the search bar on the Start Menu is probably the quickest way to find it). In that, find "Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service" then right-click on it and pick Stop. Then right-click on it again and bring up the Properties. In the Properties, find the "Startup type" and change it to "Disabled." This will supposedly keep that Art Cache thing from filling up with gigabytes of useless junk. I'm still going to keep an eye on it from time to time to make sure.
