When I hit the SCA, I was a D&D fan, and thought mostly in D&D terms. When I had to create my persona, I had the concept of a paladin in my head, combined with the 'barbarian' background of an early period celt.
Since I was able to 'play' a Marine while at work (I was a young corporal at the time) and I was able to 'play' a noble person at the SCA, it came to me that I could simply adopt those 'personas' as who I was from day to day. It marked a distinct change in who I was, and has continued to make me happier with who I am today.

In high school I got a short shag haircut when they became fashionable. This is the only time in my life I have had hair shorter than shoulder length, as it became apparent fairly quickly that I look like a giraffe without hair to soften my neck.
I can't stand wearing things that slide up and down my arms, so I never wear bracelets. But in high school, bangle bracelets were oh so fashionable and I was the absolute queen of bangle bracelets.

I miss the SCA because I miss dressing up, but I don't miss the morons at all. The latter more than anything else is why I haven't gone back. One cannot keep oneself completely isolated amongst one's friends, and I am not getting mellower with time.
