Down and safe in New York

Oct 13, 2012 10:10

Should probably record that I have arrived safely, and they let me in eventually, after about an hour queuing at Passport Control. A whole lot of foreigners arrived at once! Who could have guessed that would happen at an airport? It was probably my fault for picking a seat near the back of the plane, which meant I was one of the last off, but I ( Read more... )

It felt a pretty lousy piece at the point when I collapsed in my hotel bedroom, but things look a lot better after a proper sleep. So it really is time I sallied forth...

It seemed to be going down very well with the audience - laughs and gasps in the right places! I wasn't quite sure what accent Mary was aiming for, but I think they all had a very good shot at it.

Have a great time! I hope you enjoy the performance.

The main reason that I haven't visited America in about 15 years is that I can't face the hassle of getting into the country. Even before 9/11 it was bad enough. (Not that getting into the UK is much better, but if I'm to take any foreign holidays at all that can't be avoided.)

Hell, even if you live here, it's a hassle. :(

Actually, one thing that occurs to me is that I don't remember a problem in November 2001 (the last time I flew into JFK) when you'd think they might have been at their most paranoid - and I'd booked some sort of taxi to Newark for the con, so time can't have been that bad as I don't remember worrying about it giving up and going away. I do remember Washington was bad in 2003, and people seeming rather surprised.

Another bizarre aspect of the Passport Control pen was that they played the vice-presidential debate at us! Though you could only hear what they were saying at certain points as the queue snaked past the screen. I got to hear them giving their views on abortion (both thought it was unChristian but Biden didn't think it was his business to impose his views on other people and whatsisname did, as far as I could make out).

Today went well! It was mostly about going to the play and seeing friends - well, all the days are about seeing friends! But I might fit in a bit of sightseeing tomorrow.
