And today was the climax of this year's commemoration of the Peterloo Massacre. For the past few years, the Peterloo Memorial Campaign has arranged a rally on the nearest Sunday to the anniversary, at the massacre site, in front of Manchester Central (the old Central Station, now a conference and exhibition centre, and in the last couple of years

I said to the father that when the child becomes prime minister, this photo will be produced to show how his political career began...

That moment with the child was like a catch in the throat...

That was the best moment we've ever managed in remembering William Fildes - in the past, we've shared out the names for individuals to read, and tried asking children to read his name, but they're too shy. This child very sensibly tried to run away when we started reading the names - possibly he'd picked up more about what had happened to William than we thought - but in the end he played his role beautifully.
