A remark from metamorphosa in response to my last entry, plus another conversation today, have prompted me to dig out this article my mother wrote in 1965 about accompanying me to hospital for an operation at a time when this was not normal practice for parents. How lovely to have your mother's account now of something that still sticks in your own mind, too. It's struck me before, when you've quoted your father, how much we lose by spending much of the time with our parents as children, and what a lovely chance Paddy's writings are to see more of him as an adult.

I'm not surprised at your alarm when you couldn't speak - especially when you hadn't been warned.

I think they only thought to tell me it might hurt...

It's curious, too, reading stuff my parents wrote when they were younger than I am - especially Paddy, as there's so much he wrote in his twenties.

Thanks for sharing. I had my tonsils out and icecream was out, crisps were in! Apparently they make you heal quicker, I thought the apple sunday dinner was the most healing though. Nom Nom!
