Steady on, Thomas...

I'm only 100 pages from the end of Thomas Pynchon's last novel, and Tom Sutcliffe has just mentioned there's another one coming out next week. But that's only three years! He went nine years between the last two! And I haven't done the last Rushdie yet!

Oh well, maybe that means it won't be 1,200 pages this time. Not that I'm not enjoying ( Read more... )

I'm afraid the last one I read was Vinland. Is this one good, that you have just read?

Vineland. I loved that one! But presumably you didn't. Um... well, it's Pynchon. Personally I think he could cut out most of the descriptive lists and get it down to 800 pages or so, but I suppose I feel like my friend who says he goes on buying Dylan albums because he (Dylan) has done enough for him (my friend) to remain interested in what he has to say, and I do enjoy the story, when I can keep track of it. In practice I can only read it on long train journeys, and after a rush of trips during which I made significant progress I'm not sure whether I've got anything lined up before September, which is a pity as I think one more longish there-and-back-again would see me through.

That's the one big problem I've had with audiobooks: if you forget who on earth X is, you can't just flick back through the pages to see whether their name catches your eye.
