I have a new phone and have transferred my number. So I'll write to the local Carphone Warehouse with clear instructions for their salesmen.

[PS - Phones 4 U did indeed have an intelligent and helpful salesman, so thanks to those of you who suggested them.]

tech, satisfaction

I'm glad you managed to sort your new phone - and that it all seems to be working fine!

Excellent! I'm glad you found someone actually interested in being, you know, some use.

Are you pleased with the new phone?

Well, I haven't done much with it yet, though I've got as far as storing your number! I haven't made a voice call except to my home line (and vice versa) to check that it works, and have sent the one message (above).

Helpful Hussain confirmed the point about being able to transfer the number by swapping the Sim card or contacting the network to ask for the PAC code. I did ring about the PAC code, to make sure this was correct information before writing to CW, and they agreed it would be necessary and they would hand it over if I were transferring to another network, but obviously thought it bizarre that I should want it if I was staying with them and could just move the card.

So I swapped the Sims, and the old handset now works on the new Sim card, which means I can use it as emergency back-up - I've still got £11 on it, which Hussain said couldn't be transferred, so there's no point wasting that money. I'll probably use it instead of the landline for a bit until I'm short of credit.
