Bwahaha! I remember dealing with people like that. It's a bit flattering that they think you have such powers, but it does make you want to pull out your hair.
Going to have to take the caller's side on this one. I get that type of crap all the time, usually a recorded message telling me to call the company. I'm sorry, but any company that can't even have a real, live person make OUTGOING calls deserves to have to scramble around and figure out what it wanted with me (because it sure as heck didn't see fit to let ME know that).
Ditto. I get calls all the time, albeit from other people in the office rather than another company, that just say, "Hi, this is ___, please call me back at x___." And when I get it the next morning, I really wish I had some sense of how urgent it was and whether they will even remember what they wanted to say when I call them back.
In this particular case, the caller simply couldn't be bothered to actually write down or remember anything from the message before deleting it. So he had the opportunity to call back with a name or extension, or at least an idea what the call was about, but instead opted to call me and let me try to figure it out for him. If it had been an automated system that called him, I'd have sympathy, but since I know he had all the necessary info at his fingertips and just chose not to access it...not so much with the sympathy.

Lame. Stupidity is always much more amusing when someone else has to deal with the fallout.
See you tonight!
