Today is a red-letter day because it will be my first fencing class for which I have my very own fencing gear! Yes, I've been fencing for over a year in the club's extra equipment, and yes, considering how much the average fencer sweats during the average club practice, that is pretty gross when you think about it (which is why I try not to think ( Read more... )

I remember fencing at the university club. There was always a mad rush that verged on rioting every time new, unsoiled equipment came in.

Yay for shiny new fencing stuff!

In my fencing club we all wear nasty, sweaty jackets belonging to the club. :p They get washed about once a year, but it never seems to improve the smell or appearance!

My problem with Xena plates stems from the fact that my fencing club is generally populated (with the exception of me) by guys or fairly flat-chested females. I'm rather more well-endowed than average, and the Xena plate pockets on the jacket I use are pretty high up, so when I put the plates in, I just end up with two extra lumps in the vicinity of my collarbone! My coach has promised that when he puts in a new equipment order, he'll get me a chest protector that actually covers my chest. :p

Oh, you use the hubcaps! We use the chest protectors that are a separate thing, like a plastic bra, that is separate from the actual jacket. I tried using the hubcaps that you slip into the pockets in the jacket exactly once. "Ineffective" would be applicable. I feel sorry for you having to use the things. I don't know who designed them, but I think it was a man.

Only the COOLEST girls fence. Do not mock the plastron! Many an Amazon has wished, too late, that she could have used this wondrous invention.

Epee, Foil, or Sabre? (I fence foil--way, way back in the day. I could not fit into my togs these days).

I fence foil, though my earliest lessons were in epee, so I'm still working my way out of some very bad habits picked up in that time. *grin* My husband has fenced foil on and off since he was twelve or so, and he finally wooed me over to it a year ago.
