Hypothetically speaking, you can get a client like Azureus and look up some perfectly legal torrents on Google. I just started a couple of days ago, and it works great, for research purposes.
To get recent things, use BitTorrent. The best client on Linux/wherever is probably Azureus, but there are better clients for Windows (about the same functionality as Azureus, but doesn't hog memory like it does). I think µTorrent is one, but I don't use Windows BT programs, so.. see this for a comparison of various clients.
For files that aren't as recent, use something like eMule. About anything you can think of is on its network; that is, if you can actually get it to download it. For Linux you have mldonkey (same network), xnap (java, connects to OpenNap servers), and giFT (modular file sharing system, connects to FastTrack, Ares, Gnutella, and its own network).
Personally, I use eMule. It can take a while for files to actually download using that, but they eventually will if you keep it running for a few hours every day, and there's a decent selection on there. I have never understood how "bit torrents" work.
Feel free to ask me if you ever want any specific albums or music samples! But if you like it, consider buying the actual material. I find that downloading an album is a good way to find out if it's worth buying, and to discover new music.

Or at least that's what I use. I don't download enough to bother finding and installing other programs.
