All hope I had of starting a rewatch and keeping up with you is lost. :D
I have to say, though, that I don't think this ep is as bad as people make it out to be. I mean, it happened in the same season as Bugs; it ain't that bad. And while I think the writing for the Dean/Cassie scenes was pretty terrible, I like her, and I like that she's a more complicated personality than a lot of the pretty girls the boys end up kissing. Also I think Sam teasing Dean about her is the cutest. thing. ever.
Ahaha, I used to think I was trailblazing! But I haven't done a chronological rewatch since 2010, so mentally it hadn't registered to me that there were more than five seasons of SPN. Then I realized that actually there are nine, and I was like aw shit. XP 13 DOWN, ONLY... 182 TO GO, BEFORE OCTOBER
( ... )
Wait, what happened to your report on 1.12? 1.12 is in my top five all-time favorite SPN eps! Julie Benz. <3333
Dean does sound like a crazy person. Also Sam; see Amelia telling him he looks like a serial killer.
I have apparently turned into a full-time Sam girl at this point, so I can more than counterbalance any failures of Sam-empathy you might have. :D
You don't like Home? But Dean cries in Home! It's all moving and stuff! And then John reveals another layer of how he's a terrible person, which is always satisfying.
I, uh, skipped my reaction for 1x12, because it requires effort. XP But I'll go back to it.
Haha, for the moment I've been pushed into a stance of rather uncomfortable defensive zealotry--uh, thanks for that, fandom.
1x09 is one of those episodes where I should probably like it a lot more than I do, but I really, really don't. I didn't like it when I first saw it, and though my relationship to it has shifted here and there in the interim, I find I'm basically still where I was with this episode the fist time around! Even though Dean cries and it's moving and stuff and I really, really like Jenny and by extension Ritchie and Sari. It just doesn't work for me, except possibly at the level of I Really Love Jenny and also the level of Damn, Sam is Really Good at Drawing Trees from Dream!Memory. Though if Sam's tree-drawing abilities are my biggest take, I'm really pretty okay with that! Sounds good to me.
I think that's an entirely valid takeaway from this episode! Though I'll admit that's not my relationship to it, because the perception of Dean that O'Malley references is not actually one I ever had. Possibly this is owing to the fact that my first run-through of canon began with season 4 and then expanded achronologically from there (1x13 was the third-to-last episode I caught up on, by random luck of the draw, XD).
I suppose what I really mean is that the charitability of my review is unusual in that it is directly related to THE STUPID TRUCK (albeit not the whole of the Racist Truck Story), which is the main object of eyeroll/ridicule/embarrassment/distaste when it comes to this ep. BUT THE TRUCK THOUGH. I AM KIND OF DOWN WITH THE TRUCK. I thought its game of Chicken with the Impala in that last scene was really endearing! XP
Yeah, I could go for more of that. Stunt driving? High speed chase? Umm yes?
Yes indeed! And more ninja-esque fight scenes like in Sammy's apartment in the pilot.
I would NEVER have noticed the throughline. Thank you for pointing it out! Stuff like that is one of the things I love most about the show, but with so much canon now it's hard to keep track.
This episode does have its problems, but that chase scene. Very cool. Exploring Dean and Cassie was interesting. It would have been nice to have it explored a little further, but was sadly dropped after that episode.
I hadn't recognized the song playing at the end was the same one at the end of 9x23. I have to yet rewatch S9's finale. Just can't get myself to watch it again just yet. I may not ever be able to watch it again, who knows. I wonder if choosing the same song was just coincidence, or if that was planned. Probably a coincidence, but it is an interesting similarity.
