I never wanted to be one of those LJ people who do nothing but complain about their lives and their petty problems and end up sounding like high-strung, narcissistic, immature nutjobs who are incapable of focusing on the positive, but it occurs to me that I am, in fact, a high-strung, narcissistic, immature nutjob who is physically incapable of ( Read more... )

Take the bakery job. Like you said, it's a nice in-between job and hell you might even enjoy it (the shock and horror, I know). Plus given the stagnated economy it could potentially be years before you find a job that pertains to your degree.

Also, if it turns out to be awful or you find something else that's really great you can just leave. They can't arrest you or anything. Although I would be honest with them about your other ambitions.

They totally know I'm not going to stay there if I can help it, but they are a small business and they want someone who'll help out and not just slack off. I'd feel bad if they finished training me and then I got another job and they had to start again, but they know that could happen.

See, that was my reasoning. Thank you for being the first person who has condoned my decision. It's nice to be treated like a reasonable person who puts thought into her actions.

You're welcome. If you have too much heart to screw the small businessman maybe you should try a chain (of anything really); you've got some work experience, you could probably get work in retail. You're pretty much gonna have to take a shit job for at least a little bit until you get up on your feet, and I think it's a little absurd that everyone else expects you to have found your career-job already.

Pretty sure that if I applied to a soulless chain I would never hear from them again. Think this is my one shot at a job ever, so I'm just gonna have to suck it up and fuck this guy.

...fuck this guy over. That's what I meant.

Things I have learned by existing: job-hunting advice from people who have jobs, or have had jobs in the past that were obtained during a not-as-shitty economic time, is shitty advice. Always. Tree got a similar treatment from his mom - as soon as he got an interview with somebody for a possible part-time job, she was all, "You should look for a second job!" and things of that nature. Since that fell through (since it wasn't viable), she's been badgering him about moving back to Concord and taking a job there, despite having spent a year job hunting there without any luckNo, I hate most well-intentioned job-hunting advice from people that aren't even remotely in the same position, because it's all condescending crap about how you're not looking hard enough or aiming high enough or being charming enough. If I were in your position, I'd take the bakery job in a heartbeat. As long as you're clear about your intentions before they hire you on, you've got no reason to feel bad about following through with said intentions if the opportunity ( ... )

It's to my understanding that, in Ohio, at least, single college-educated white girls with no dependents aren't real great candidates for food stamps. The criteria may be a little looser in MA, but at the moment the hassle of applying doesn't seem worth it, especially since I intend to have some sort of job before they get around to processing my application.

It's not really food I'm worried about, anyway, since I'm basically living with my "roommate"'s family and they're willing to feed me. It's more coming up with rent that'll be the problem.

With the state of the economy, and because Boston in particular is so heavily populated by students (aka more people looking for jobs), you'll be hard-pressed to find something immediately that is heavily involved with biology.

Frankly, I'm rather jealous of this bakery job of yours. I, for one, love small businesses, and through my own desperation for a job I've discovered that I like working with customers (and am very seriously considering any job like the cashier job I have now to be training for when I open my tea shop and grow a beard. I should try panhandling some time, haha!)

And even if it turns out you can't stand this job, at the very least it's money in your pocket and you're learning something. So, take the bakery job. It may be a blessing in disguise.

And, after mulling it over for a bit, I feel rather insulted by whoever told you that this job "wasn't worth your time".... It's a slap in the face as someone who's worked as a peddler, a host, and a cashier, and really just strikes me as classist bullshit.

Fuck them. I'm going to go watch The Ghost of Mrs. Muir.

Oh don't you start, too.

At the end of the day, I am ridiculously overqualified to be handing out melonbread in a shopping mall.

Take it from someone who has been without a job since the moment she left Mount Holyoke's campus, oh god--14 months ago? Take what you can, and to hell with everything else. That bakery job? It sounds lovely. You love to bake ( ... )

Well, take it from me, even if you had a job they'd still be lecturing you, so don't sweat it too much.

I'm sure you'll find something. Weren't you looking around the DC area?

I'm looking in the Baltimore/DC area, Greater Boston area, Western MA, up here (though that would be temporary and would pay for such things as a car and moving expenses and perhaps the occasional trip to see people)

Unfortunately, my specialized skills aren't that specialized, which means there are TONS of people able to fill the jobs I qualify for.

Eh, tomorrow I'm going up town to do my every-so-often round of the local businesses for job applications and to test my mettle against that of the tourists. And buy an advance ticket for Harry Potter.

Yeah. God, I don't know what I'd do if I had to find my own place to live. Good luck!
