Hermione packed her bags slowly, by hand not by magic. As much as she knew that leaving was the right thing to do, her heart still refused to acknowledge the facts. But their time together was over and the logical step was to move out of their shared apartment.
An errand tear escaped down her cheek and Hermione absently wiped it away before stuffing a sweater into her already full suitcase.
“You don’t have to move out,” a quite voice came from the door. Hermione didn’t turn around. Instead she was struggling with the zipper of the suitcase.
“Don’t you think you are overreacting?” he asked. He was beginning to sound annoyed. Good, Hermione thought. If he was going to be behave like a prat, she could be angry with him. It would make leaving easier.
But he refused to make things easy. When had he ever? He continued to watch while she struggled with her bags.
Hermione gave one last desperate tug and the zipper of her suitcase finally closed. She was done packing. Straightening up, she looked at the man at the door for the first time since he had come to her room.
Draco Malfoy met her gaze squarely and Hermione had to look away lest she changed her mind about him.
“We were only supposed to be roommates,” she said, looking at the floor. “Last night should never have happened.”
“If you regret sleeping with me that much, we can always pretend it never happened and go back to being friends,” he drawled.
“How can I stand here with you and not be moved by you?” Hermione whispered. “We can’t just act like nothing changed between us. Besides, we we’re never really friends.”
“Maybe we weren’t friends, but we are good together.”
Hermione shook her head. They had been a disaster. They never agreed on anything and they fought every day. One could only imagine what kind of couple they would make.
“You’re overthinking this, Granger,” Draco commented knowingly.
“I tried my best to be guarded, I'm an open book instead,” Hermione replied wryly. The truth of the matter was that in their time together Draco had developed the uncanny ability to read her mind. At least it seemed that way. Especially when she was plagued by doubts.
“You’ve always been easy to read. I’m just the only one who calls you on your bull,” Draco said, confirming her theories once again that he must be a very accomplished Legilimens. He didn’t even need eye contact.
“One more reason to move out,” Hermione mumbled. She awkwardly slung one of her bags over her shoulder and lifted up the suitcase. Struggling with the weight of the luggage, she turned to the door, which Draco was still blocking.
“Get out of my way, Malfoy.”
“No.”
He took the suitcase and for one wild second she thought he would help her carry it. She should have known better. Instead, Draco just let it drop to the floor. Then he grabbed her bag and flung it back into her room where Hermione heard it land with a dull thud.
“I’ll be damned if I let you run like a scared Hufflepuff.”
Not giving Hermione a chance to protest, he backed her against the wall and kissed her. Hermione struggled at first, but desire washed over her in waves at Draco’s touch and eventually her body betrayed her and she couldn’t not return his advances.
When Draco picked her up and carried her to his bedroom, all thoughts about moving out fled Hermione’s mind. At least for the moment.
