Naoki======================
His new charge might be neither the brightest nor the most positive person on the planet, but she had always made it a point to greet everyone with a genuine smile. She herself had believed that she was, in fact, the happiest girl alive. For the popular boy at school had agreed to go out with her on a date.
It was purely by accident that she overheard his conversation with a group of friends the following week. His laughter that once sounded like music to her ears had turned into a mocking jeer.
“Date? Give me a break. I felt sorry for her, alright. You know perfectly well that no one else would agree to date an ugly and useless girl like her.”
He witnessed her world crumble around her as the newest gossip material spread like wildfire. He watched as her bright smiles faded away upon noticing her schoolmates pointing in her direction, saw her push her untouched lunch away when she saw them covering their grins with their hands. She eventually locked herself in her room, refusing to go to school, shunning all human contact.
She spent the next two days curled up on her bed, staring into nothing.
His relief when she had gotten out of bed was short-lived. She had donned her favourite white dress in preparation to go out of the house, expression deceptively calm as she entered the lift in her apartment block, pressing the button for the topmost floor. As the elevator rose, the only thing that betrayed her emotions was the slight tremble in her lower lip, the moisture in her eyes.
He watched as she stepped out of the elevator and ascended to the rooftop. Flickers of emotion played across his usually stoic face as his charge stepped onto the ledge that bordered the roof. He saw her open a compact mirror and look into it, at the person who that boy had unthinkingly called “ugly and useless”. He saw her return the compact to her pocket, taking a deep breath and closing her eyes.
He knew that he was forbidden to interfere with mortal affairs, that by doing so he would be cast into hell as punishment. But she was only seventeen, and had a long life in front of her. Having been given the documents detailing her purpose in life before being sent to watch over her from the cradle, he of all the guardian angels would know.
She could not die today.
Throwing aside all inhibitions, he ran forward to grab a hold of her wrist just as she stepped off the ledge, pulling her in for a secure embrace.
Despite himself, he felt his body becoming less solid, less real. He felt a strange sensation as her arms passed through his torso, felt rather than heard her wail of anguish when she let out her frustrations from the past few days. A soft smile graced Elly’s face as he disappeared from this earth for good.
She smelt like cinnamon and lilies.
