\o/! I love Mitch Benn so much, he's fabulous and a really nice guy in person, too. (We got into this whole argument about Torchwood and Jack/Ianto once, it was hilarious.)
Wow, such_heights, now I really want to know what the Jack/Ianto argument was about! Can you share more?
Also, do British people (other than Mitch Benn) really squee about the BBC? I LOVE THE BBC, but--for me as an American--that's a special cult taste. I often wonder whether Brits would laugh at my enthusiasm.
Sure! There's a monthly Doctor Who gathering in London that attracts all sorts - this was the same occasion that I met Steven Moffat, before he became showrunner, and before the new series started it'd get people like RTD and David Tennant coming along. A friend of mine knows Mitch a little, and he stopped by and we started talking. I believe that this was before S2 of Torchwood had aired, and we were discussing Jack and Ianto's relationship. I forget the exact details, but I think he was saying that it was kind of shallow and fanservice-like, and I was defending it. Mostly it was a lighthearted discussion about how Torchwood was pretty ridiculous but we liked it anyway.
The BBC is such a major institution here that it's pretty easy to take it for granted, but in recent months it's been coming under threat from the government, so a lot of us are feeling very protective about the whole thing. Watching that vid gives me enormous warm fuzzies, and I'm sure it would for lots of other Brits too.
OMG, the monthly Doctor Who gathering sounds wonderful--such a friendly community-building thing! And (speaking again as an American fan of DW and other British shows) I always find it fascinating to hear about how DW is so intertwined with many people's lives in the UK.
a lighthearted discussion about how Torchwood was pretty ridiculous but we liked it anyway. *smile* I think we can all agree on that, even though things have become a bit heavier since then. (Though I happen to agree with Benn about Jack and Ianto in S1... it was S2 that convinced me.)
Thanks for the on-the-ground insight! I can see how threatened government cuts would help people to appreciate the BBC after taking it for granted. Enormous warm fuzzies, yes!
(And no, not me unfortunately. Googling my name is a depressing exercise in discovery of how many namesakes I have and how much more they've accomplished worthy of search engine hits...)
