I had originally intended this first entry, post-joining the ranks of paidmembers to be a happy one - singing all praises of the glorious magnetgirl, hallowed be her name. For she is the bestest. But alas ( Read more... )

Thank you. I was pretty sure this was going to be universally unpopular, so I was braced for unpleasantness or at least utter radio silence - thanks for defying my expectations!

Thank you for this post, noone seems willing to talk sense about this subject . Unless people can be understood and are free to speak honestly without fear of censure then we'll never understand the complex relationship of sexuality, fantasy and crime well enough to allow personal freedom while also preventing abuse.

Thank you! As I said above, I was pretty sure this post was going to be either raged at or completely ignored, so it's nice to hear otherwise.

Hi. You don't know me, but I found this entry following links from Ellis's blog. What gives, Spider Jerusalem?, indeed. He might be quick to say that Spider Jerusalem is a fictional character, not Warren Ellis, and I'd be quick to point out the parallel for fan writers.

This is an excellent take on the whole affair. Would you mind if I liked to it?

Wow, despite it all, the internet is really cool. Hi. Please feel free to link, and thank you for commenting.

I think you're totally right, both about the fictional character Spider/real guy Warren Ellis, and the parallel for fan writers...

In fact, the divide between author and character/creation is material for a whole other post actually.

I loved this. The thing is you shouldn't just care if you're someone whose journal got suspended, or if you're someone who was just trying to cope with a terrible experience. You shouldn't only care because you're someone who liked a story or a poem or a painting or a play once that had these elements in them, or if even, god forbid, one of these things turned you on. You shouldn't only care if you're a fetishist or kinked, and these are the only fantasies that get you going.

You should care because we should be able to talk and think and imagine whatever the hell we want. Even if it's deviant. Especially if it's deviant.

Because whilst I personally am squicked to high hell about incest, rape, childporn etc. and neither want to read, hear or know about it on any level, by gods unless someone has posted actual material showing they have committed or are about to commit a crime, you do not intefere with their right to free speech, and you do not strip them of the vehicle with which they carry out that right. No one should ever be able ( ... )

Thank you! And your tangent is awesome, and not really all that tangential.

I especially loved: "And while you may want to avoid people because of their impulses, you shoud never lampoon them. One day someone may disapprove of your social mores."

I wholeheartedly agree.

Thanks, darling!! You're totally right, and I'm not sure the situation needed any extra stupid really.

Because yeah, we really meet our uncles-parents-siblings-teachers-coaches-familyfriends-priests on the internet.

This whole situation offended me personally on so many levels.
