It's interesting to contrast the David Lynch and Sci-Fi Channel treatments of the same story.

Lynch ... yeah, had a lot of flaws, and while I prefer the Sci-Fi Channel mini-series overall, I still think Kyle MacLachlan made the better Paul, if only because Alec Newman is so blank.

My mom, on the other hand, has no such reservations, but that's because, while I identify with Paul, she identifies with Jessica, so she was all over Saskia Reeves' portrayal, which arguably overshadowed Paul, rather than Francesca Annis' portrayal, in which Jessica almost came across as Paul's Sam Gamgee.

eta: and, er, speaking as someone with weird hair, that swept thingie in the second photo might not exactly take very long. IT IS UNARGUABLY SILLY. But it might not take so long, or be a half-assed attempt at a nice style. sigh.
