So, the first (and, sadly, the easiest) hurdle is over. I had my EEG yesterday afternoon, and let me drop some knowledge unto you people. Anyone who tells you that EEGs won't hurt if you have long and curly hair is a LYING LIAR WHO LIES ( Read more... )

Okay, clearly what I had was not an EEG, unless there are different kinds because that is NOT the test I had done. Except I'm positive that's what they called it. So I don't know.

You had no electrode patch thingies glued all over your head?

I did, but also my chest and my legs. And there were no lights.

Yeah. I've got raised red patches on my forehead today that look like I was electrocuted.

Mm. EEGs. I had to get one every six months back when I was little. But back then, they used some super powerful rubbing alcohol to break loose the cement. I remember having a full on panic attack once because I couldn't breath for the fumes. And, y'know, the bleeding head routine.

My tech was telling me how relatively easy it is to do EEGs now with the new machines. She used a Neurofax on me. She said that this was a top of the line model by Nihon Kohden. The electrodes were tiny.

*g* But does it still come out as a long piece of paper covered with squiggly lines?

the mildly sad part of this is that I'm familiar with EEG technology, and what's going to be coming out of the private sector for gaming and computer control is really leaping ahead of the medical stuff.

Gamers/early adopter tech-heads obviously won't stand for electrode goop or scalp cement, so these companies have been beefing up the sensitivity, getting better noise-filters installed, and otherwise removing the need for the sensors to be so very perfectly attached.

Medical technology is very slow to advance in some respects, given unit cost, the lack of modularity, and huge certification costs. but in this particular arena, it's terribly obvious. When front-line hospitals have diagnostic gear that's about to be significantly surpassed by a Wii accessory, one has to wonder.

What new gaming technology are you referring to?

The most famous and closest to market is one built by Emotiv systems, which is for PC gaming, they have stealth competitors that are attempting to get to market after them with improved products ( ... )
