big_scoop Whoa. Don’t get your scrubs in a bunch.
Evan: Whoa. Don’t get your scrubs in a bunch. Everything’s going to work out just fine.
Divya: You need to get back here and dig us out of the hole that you put us in. And you need to do it now. This is the worst possible time for you to throw into jeopardy the one thing that still makes any sense.
Evan: Oh my god. You went through with it. Didn’t you? You got engaged.
The cold war’s still raging?
Divya: The cold war’s still raging?
Evan: Yeah. He wouldn’t even hear my pitch.
Divya: Evan. It is time to easy off the hard sell. You need to regain Hank’s trust first as his brother, then as his CFO. And you were right, I didn’t call off the engagement.
Evan: Yeah, I figured that giant ring wasn’t a consolation prize. What happened? You just chicken out?
Divya: I didn’t chicken out. What I realized, at the last possible moment, was that I had to let a dream go. And face the reality, in order to embrace what’s most important: family. Look Evan, I know that you want Hank to forgive your father and welcome him back with open arms. But if you keep pushing your dream, despite the reality, you’re going to lose what matters most to you.
...and I had to add this little gem.
Divya: I’ll help you find a great replacement. And I’ll train them to whip Evan daily, just like I do.
I still can’t believe it.
Evan: I still can’t believe it.
Divya: Selling a state of the art panini maker can buy you a house like this?
Evan: No, that you’re engaged.
Divya: Thanks for the reminder.
Evan: Look, I know that parents can put their own interests ahead of what’s best for their kids. [deep breath] But that’s the beauty of an engagement is that it’s open-ended. It’s not to late, ‘til you set a date.
Divya: The wedding’s in 60 days.
Evan: Oh. Yeah, you’re screwed. I’m kidding, kind of.
Nice job back there.
Divya: Nice job back there.
Evan: Yeah? You too.
Divya: You want to talk about him.
Evan: About Spencer?
Divya: Eddie R.
Evan: Ah. It’s just complicated family stuff.
Divya: Yeah. What would I know about that?
Evan: Alright. I started talking to my dad again about a year ago. He called me on my 30th Birthday. And, I hadn’t talked to him in 20 years mind you, and you know what the first thing he said to me was?
Divya: What?
Evan: “How’s Hank?”
Divya: I’m sorry to hear that.
Evan: Yeah, that’s just how he’s started every conversation since, “How’s Hank?” Hmm. I guess I really needed to tell someone that.
Divya: It says a lot about your father.
Evan: Yeah, it says a lot about my brother.
Divya: But it says the most about you.
Evan: Yeah. What does it say exactly?
Divya: That your caught between your rock, and your hard place. And rather than just trying to squirm out. You’ve been trying to make everything fit together comfortably again.
Evan: I guess I really needed someone to tell me that.
Divya: Well, don’t let it go to your head.
Evan: I’m--what? [laugh]
"Evya" as I've dubbed Evan and Divya are my number one OTP since last summer. (Runner-ups going to TVD's Elena/Damon and DW's Nine/Rose.) I watch quite a bit of tv and enjoy the shows and relationships but this one stands out for me. They're both young adults who have a lot of pressure put on them by themselves and their families. In the first season, they were opposites. Divya kept her personal and professional lives completely divided to the point of keeping them secret from each other. While Evan tried to enmesh his personal and professional lives into the rich aspirational living that now surrounds him in the Hamptons. They are both very driven and their different approaches caused the legacy of bickering like-an-old-married-couple that dominated last season. (Which I loved.)
However, nobody can deny that Evan was at times obnoxious and annoying in his constant need to network and needle his way into people's lives. (Which is why some fans hate him.) But Evan always had a good heart and I understand that the writers needed to start him off there so he had space to slowly mature into the guy we love by season's end. Plus Evan has an underlying redemption story (which are my FAVORITE!) in the first season and due to events in the finale has become full blown this year. Also, due to these events, the annoying obnoxious part of Evan's personality is gone permanently (according to the actor who plays him, Paulo Costanzo, which he is happy about).
Divya is a strong-willed independent woman. It's only later we learn she's trying to lead a double-life to the one her parent's have chosen for her. Also, while she's a smart professional Physician's Assistant, she occasionally lacks a compassionate bedside manner. And this is the part I love: Evan and Divya hilariously point out each others weak points and encourage each other to change so they will be better people and not be afraid to go after what they want. They care about each other and it shows.
Plus they have MAD CHEMISTRY! Even the cable network sees it. Though Hank and Jill are the official (on-again/off-again) couple of the show there are zero ads for their relationship. Versus Evan and Divya, who have a promo devoted to their love/hate friendship and a 3-minute web extra video devoted to "The Best of Evan & Divya". [wink]
