A good use of Ben Franklin's truism

Aug 03, 2008 00:10

The temptress of socialism is constantly luring us with the offer: "give up a little of your freedom and I will give you a little more security." As the experience of this century has demonstrated, the bargain is tempting but never pays off. We end up losing both our freedom and our security.

Mark Perry, 1995

it goes back to 2004, and the whole 'we don't want a wallmart' -> 'yha, well, the 84 grand we got for a local backwater township compaing donations says otherwise' dispute.

Holy cow, that's a whole mess of fighting over a tiny patch of land. I wonder if it'd be happening at all if Ann Arbor hadn't enacted the 30yr moratorium on new development. Is there even a shopping district in the township?

well, and the random 80k donations for a local race for a township (the highly contested mayoral race for Kenosha WI, about 130k people was about 9k per candidate spent)
