The Deities’ World: Lucifer: Halloween

It would have been much easier to pretend that Halloween didn’t exist, but every year Lucifer let himself get hurt and angry all over again. He was fed up with being villianised, being viewed as a fallen angel who ruled over Hell, when neither was true. Growling, he stomped out of his office, telling himself he was being an idiot for letting it all get to him so much. There were other races who knew him as his true self, as a god, but, for some reason he couldn’t quite work out, Earth was important to him. Even though there were times when he really wanted to walk away he couldn’t, because he knew that there would come a time when someone would listen to him.

Lucifer was unsurprised when he walked into his kitchen, craving something sweet, to find Archimedes in there making hot chocolate and, from the smell filling the air, brownies. “You know you don’t have to look after me, right?” Lucifer said, smiling.

Archimedes smiled back. “I just wanted to be here for you, Luc. I know how difficult this day is for you and…” He shrugged. “It was important to me that I came over to check on you.”

“I’m glad you’re here.”

“How are you feeling?”

Biting hard on his lip Lucifer did his best to get his emotions under control, so he could talk to Archimedes without letting everything get to him, but then a tear, unwanted and unexpected, trickled down his cheek. “I hate it.” Lucifer wiped the tear away, angry with himself. “Every year I think maybe someone, anyone, might hear me calling to them and it never happens. I’m still Satan to the humans, because they don’t want to listen.”

The arms that curled around him helped. Lucifer looked up into Archimedes’ face and sighed, trying once again to control his emotions. “One day someone will hear you, Luc,” Archimedes said, kissing Lucifer’s cheek. “It’s just going to take time, but when it finally happens it’s going to be worth the wait.”

“I don’t know.” Lucifer shook his head. “It’s been millennia, Archie, and I just don’t know if I can keep doing it. There are other races who hear my voice easily and yet I keep focusing on the humans as though they’re the most important race in the multiverse.”

“You know that I’ll be there no matter what you decide to do, but…” Archimedes looked at Lucifer and it was easy to see the worry filling his eyes. “I think you should give it a little more time. If it’s been millennia then surely a few more years won’t be too difficult.”

“Maybe.” Lucifer let his forehead rest against Archimedes’. “Right now I think all I want is that hot chocolate you made and a couple of brownies.”

“I brought ice cream.” Archimedes smiled. “Callie suggested it.”

Smiling again, feeling a little more happy, Lucifer curled an arm around Archimedes. “Thank you. I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
