There is a softness to the granite that she’s found and lost time and time again over the years as each new day rises and falls. (rises and falls. rises and falls). He comes and goes freely - he still has school to worry about, and her grandchildren won’t understand his cold, blank presence behind her chair. He is her bodyguard, cold and unmoved, granite and lost as he picks her up with a hint of carefulness and carries her up the stairs to bed. (blankets pull back, and blankness disappears as she holds him softly in the dark.)

By morning he flees with his long-forgotten promise; this is how it was meant to be.
