There're lots of reasons Jessica hates Bella Swan-the way she wears her hair, the way she doesn't talk. And then the boys, because Mike is always dumb and googly-eyed when she walks by, and Edward too-good-for-you Cullen thinks there's something beautiful in her stupid white paper face. If he likes girls in closed-up boxes and ratty jeans from K-mart, he could've just said so. It would have saved them both some time.
And then there's the tall, dangerous one, the bad-boy biker that's always screwing around in the parking lot. He never wears a jacket so she can see how his arms move-like James Dean mixed with whats-his-name from that book they had to read last fall. Bella's always telling him off, like she does with all of her friends, but he sticks around. Bella deserves it, except for the part where she doesn't.
One day when Jessica sees him standing there out in the cold, she decides not to go to calculus. "Hi, I'm Jessica." She's never had a problem introducing herself. She's a nice person, you know, ( ... )

She thinks she's gonna lord it over Bella at lunchtime, just to see what happens. But instead she keeps it close, like it'll protect her from the cold-one damn thing that Bella Swan can't have.
it's so cool how you can develop her character -- show jessica how to grow -- in one little drabble. and i love it.
