I know the first chapters are REALLY hard to get through, trust me, but it's totally worth it if you can get to where the characters start growing. And Fukunaga. :D

Liar Game! When I first started it, I was describing it kinda like Death Note paired with Miranda from D.Gray-man. Nao seriously has come along way from the beginning. Akiyama suffers from they "you're SUPPOSED to think he's cool and thus like him" vibe, thus, I think he's cool, but not All That. =/ Just isn't as endearing to me like Nao is. I totally expect him to do the kind of genius moves he does, so, meh. (Not saying I can predict the exacts.) And Fukunaga is freaking awesome! I like seeing her get owned as well as seeing her own others. Her reactions when SHE didn't realize something was going on is great. Especially if it's from something Nao pulls off. (More so when Nao doesn't get why her method is so amazing, I love that sincerety of hers.) I think the Death Note comparison is about all the mind game convoluted logic stuff and not so much saying Death Note is better, it's just a series that someone understand the vibe if you compare it to it.
