What did you get out of school?

I was talking to soranokumo the other night, and we somehow got on the topic of school, and what did you learn that was actually useful for you in the real world. I thought about it some, and my answers surprised me. I mean, yeah, taking Japanese in school obviously got me into the auto industry. But other than that ( Read more... )

In addition to all the practical stuff I use on the job, like how to use a jigsaw, how to break a script into beats, and how to sew...

3. Give credit where credit is due. That can mean taking the time to thank someone or to properly cite a source. Either way, you look like a much better person and not like some lazy, ungrateful asshat.

2. You get back as much as you invest. I'm not talking money, I mean time and effort. I guarantee you a student who works his ass off at a state school got a million times more out of his school experience than someone who slept through his classes at Harvard.

1. There is no such thing as a masterpiece. If you think there is, then you stop producing work because you're sure you've done all you can do.

Essay writing...

Oh yes. When I'm writing whitepapers, position papers, or memos, I always have "Do I have an intro? Did I introduce my main ideas? Did I use separate paragraphs for each main idea? Did I write a clear and concise conclusion?" running through my head EVERY SINGLE TIME.

For having a substandard english and history education (I was tossed into that evil amalgamation known as "Link" *hack spit*) , somehow most of the important bits stuck.

As for #1, well, yeah. It starts in high school, and just keeps going.
