I imagine the predictable question of "Have you called them?" is naturally a stupid thing to ask, right? :(

I have. They record it every time you call (if they get your student number out of you) and the committee sees those notes on your application so there is prevailing wisdom that says don't call too much or they might reject you for being too needy. If you think I'm paranoid, you should see some of the people on the law school bogs who are afraid of saying anything negative about the process because the law schools may some how figure out who that person is and take punitive action against them.
