Where had she seen a more beautiful snowfall?

A battle covering a mountainside in the north against a group of rogue Genesis copies, ending just before dawn? The sun had come up over their small group of SOLDIERs, throwing shades of pink and gold over the already bloodstained snow; the heavier snowfall of the night had slowed, and now only a light dusting of snow fell, drifting down onto the bodies of friend and foe alike. It had been a victory, yes, but, as always against the copies, a victory won with the deaths of their allies. The blood staining the snow was still visible in the morning light, as darker patches under bodies and in sprays across the snow that were slowly being covered up.

She and San sat together under the makeshift cover along with the rest of their group; even as she leaned close to him to keep warm and listened with a grin to Kiniarel's grumbling about the lateness of their transport, she watched the snow fall in a kind of peace; even with the losses they had suffered, losses they would mourn later, the snowy dawn held a deadly kind of beauty.

Or there had been the time she had spent in Wutai following Meteorfall, alone and wasting away from Geostigma. She had spent many a winter's evening sitting in the open door of her room, looking out over the small pond in the garden as it reflected a gray sky, snow falling gently into the water. The small ripples spreading from the snowflakes did little to change the overall effect of the reflection. Gray sky and gray water, both reflecting the melancholy peace she had found while waiting for her life to come to a slow end.

But now, this snow...

There was no peace to be found here. She ducked back and forth between hastily built fortifications, careful to avoid enemy fire as she did her best to restock her weaponry and retaliate. Shots at her exploded on the snow just behind her feet, or soared over her head, as she dashed along, looking for the perfect chance to strike. She could see reinforcements just ahead, and made a dive for the protected area just as a shot went particularly close over her head...

“Mama, here's the rest of the snowballs!”

Kira grinned, patting Amaya's hooded head as she knelt behind the snow wall the two of them had built up. The attack on their fort had stopped temporarily, and she leaned closer to Amaya as she picked up a few snowballs.

“All right, Maya, here's what we're going to do...”

A minute later, they burst out from the fort, Maya holding onto her shoulders and throwing snowballs while she ran straight at San. Her husband, still collecting snow, looked up in surprise as they charged with mock war cries. Before they could get close enough for her daughter's snowballs to come within range of San, however, he managed to throw a well-aimed shot at her legs.

With a laugh, she let herself fall to her knees, carefully letting Amaya to the ground before collapsing into the snow dramatically. “Dear Maya,” she tried to say dramatically; a burst of giggles ruined the effect, “you must avenge me! Go forward and defeat that evil man! Stuff some snow down his socks if you have to!”

San was laughing, only to be tackled a moment later by his daughter. Amaya tried to reach up to throw the remaining snow in his face, only to miss. San picked her up and spun around with her, making her squeal in delight, the indignation of just a few seconds before forgotten. Kira turned over on her back to watch them, a wide smile on her face.

“Mama, Mama! I've been captured! Help!”

Still laughing, Kira pushed herself out of the snow, shuffling like a zombie toward the two. “I'll turn him into a zombie!” she declared, leaping at the pair.

The three of them fell to the snow, Amaya held carefully between them. There was a flurry of snow, and the three of them hugged close. Snuggling with the two of them, watching the snow fall onto them from above...this had to be the best of them all, she concluded.
