Fantasy books I recommend, sorted by author's last name in alphabetical order.
- The Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb
Literally about a bastard named Fitz who is specifically, a royal bastard, which means he is even more screwed over than the usual bastard as he is basically conscripted due to his birth to be a workhorse for his country. Trained as an assassin, Fitz starts to develop skills and the uncanny ability to be at the right place at the right time. Intrigue and havoc surrounds Fitz without any effort. I can't reveal too much without spoiling but a poignant and bittersweet tale.
- Assassin's Apprentice
- Royal Assassin
- Assassin's Quest
- The Ice Queen by Alice Hoffman
About a woman who is struck by lightning and what happens to her afterward. It sounds boring but it really isn't. Because she fricking got HIT BY LIGHTNING. That will mess a person up.
- Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman
The book that the movie was based on, I actually saw the movie first and read the book later but I still end up liking the book better. A story that is simultaneously in the past and present as it tells the tale of a family of witchy women. The reading experience is a bit like watching ripples on the surface of a water except recreated in word form.
- The Probable Future by Alice Hoffman
A book that is similar to Practical Magic in that it also features a family of strange women but not quite. The Sparrow women all are cursed (or blessed) with an unique ability when they turn a certain age and this has been happening for generations without too much muss or fuss. Until the latest generation of Sparrow women, Stella, develops the ability to see the manner of people's deaths. HOLY CRAP, it opens a can of worms that was centuries in the making.
