i basically want a livejournal that's not livejournal, that i don't feel silly typing into but still operates as a lightweight, web-based, privacy-controlled journal into which to write down thoughts i have about research

I quite like evernote in terms of organizing random thoughts. But it definitely lacks the blog-like feel. Maybe create a special LJ filter just for research-related posts?

I am trying evernote now! It has dates and a chronological ordering of things, so that'll be good. I was afraid to try it before because I thought it cost money, even for non-premium things.
