This reminds me so much of losing our Puzzle two years ago - so much so that I'm crying again. I didn't have the strength to go into the vet's surgery with her - spouse was away when we came to the conclusion that she'd suffered enough - and so my last memories of her are of her in pain and miserable.
I'm so glad that you and BB were able to stay with Alex and will have the knowledge that you made his last hours as comfortable as possible. He knew that he was loved.
Oh, I'm so sorry that this has made you cry! I have had the experience you did; we had a beloved deaf cat named Desmond, who we had to take to an emergency vet at 3 a.m. when he had what we think was a heart attack, and they didn't allow us to go in with him, so our last memory of him was when he was in pain.
But you know, you loved Puzzle, and Puzzle knew it - she didn't connect you to her pain. She connected you to all the good things in her life, and that's a good thing to remember.
We always know intellectually that our beloved pets will live shorter lives than we do, and that we will have to say goodbye, will have to watch them die. But that's only intellectually. Emotionally, we never seem ready.
This is beautiful. I'm sniffling now. Thanks so much for sharing. He looks like he was a beautiful cat, and he had a very peaceful end with the humans who loved him.
Thanks - he was a beautiful cat - a very handsome gentleman, in fact - and perhaps someday I'll find a picture taken of him when he was younger and really quite magnificent.

*hugs you hard*
Give BB a kiss from me. And lots of love to both of you.
