I've been so busy over the last 24 hours that I haven't had a chance to circle back and respond - the starch thing is one of my biggest dietary bugaboos. I looooove carbs and not having them in the amounts I'm used to is hard; it's equally hard for me to switch my allegiance to non-carb substitutes. The diet books always airily assume you'll learn to love carrot sticks. Nope....
Thanks for the hugs. Today has been sunny, more or less, although the wind has been fierce, so my mood has lightened.
I think the diet books are full of horse poopy, to be honest. A carrot stick will never be as awesome as, e.g., a warm piece of raisin bread. I loves me some fresh fruit and veggies, but the most delicious fruit, the most creative salad, will never equal the euphoria-inducing pleasure of standing in a When Pigs Fly bakery and inhaling the scents of fresh bread
( ... )
I'm so glad to hear someone else has the same thoughts about carbs and sweets that I do! You're so right about fresh bread, and sweets! I used to love to bake bread - baked all our bread for a few years there, doing both white and wheat - and now I don't do that at all. Cutting bread out of the house might not work for me, since BB might want some, although he isn't eating as much of it as he used to either.
And I'm so much of an all-day nosher that that's definitely dangerous ground for me as well.
I need to try to start swimming. I got myself a park district swim membership last year, and then never used it. Perhaps a second run at it will be more successful; I really enjoy swimming, and it would be another way to exercise.
Thanks, my dear - your "Grateful" posts were what convinced me to give it a try, too. I need something to keep my mind from settling into old, toxic patterns.
*Hugs you happily* Need to get back to those myself. Life has been hectic...even if slow, lol! They do make you feel better though - and people's reactions to posts like this make them that much better!
Yes, the reactions help reinforce the idea that people like to hear good things, and that they are happy when they realize that you're happy, too. It's so true that happiness begets happiness, eh?
Spring is coming - so good. Our clocks haven't gone forward yet, but in the south of England it's already light for 12 hours or so, about 6-6 currently, which is soooo much better than a few weeks ago. Leaving work in daylight makes such a difference! The only thing is, here it's still really COLD...
You are significantly farther north than Chicago, (up at about the latitude of Newfoundland, if I recall correctly), so yes, you'd have longer days in the summer and, unfortunately, longer nights in the winter. I'm so glad that the daylight is creeping back for you.
I hadn't realized that the British Isles also have Daylight Savings Time. For some reason, I'd thought that was something North American farmers had somehow generated. How parochial of me!
Daylight Saving Time (or as we call it, British Summer Time) in the UK came in during the First World war - I think the idea was to help the war effort by making it easier for people both to work and to travel during daylight hours. There have been debates ever since over whether we should keep it all year, or even move to the same time zone as Western Europe - it tends to be the Scots and Northern Irish who oppose that, as it would mean in northern Scotland it wouldn't get light till mid-morning in winter, and they worry about children going to school etc.
The Wikipedia article on British Summer Time gives you some idea how convoluted we've managed to be about it over the years!

LOL at #5. That's *so hard*, so kudos to you for taking those first baby steps.

(I left a rather snippy comment on one of your posts; this is my less snippy way to say welcome to my journal.)
