Gut reaction to the recent news: not as devastated as I thought I would be...

Well, since I just learned about this thanks to a friend's SMS, here's my gut reaction, fresh from my somewhat drunk-on-the-recent-news brain.

When I first watched Doctor Who, Chris Eccleston was the Doctor and I thought no-one could ever replace him as the Doctor. I was a Nine fan through and through, and when I realised he wasn't going to be in ( Read more... )

I was wondering how you'd react to this, you rabid Ten fan you ;) But you make a lot of sense, and your reaction's very similar to mine (except that Nine is still my Doctor). I don't trust Moffat with the Doctor either, but if he's going to be playing with Eleven then at least he has a clean slate to mess with instead of doing a complete character-assassination job on Ten yet again. I'll watch; I may be pleasantly surprised, but we'll see.

And, hey, now we're back in the position of writing fic for an era that's officially over, so we don't have to worry about new canon affecting what we write :)

Which reminds me... you said you have fic ongoing? Where is it and why haven't I seen it? ;)

*grins* I'll probably have something to show you over the weekend. ;)

Yeah, I'm much less worried about S5 now. It'll be a new character, new companions, and I won't have to scream and growl because Moffat's view on Ten is so far away from mine. He can do what he wants, and I'll feel less frustrated if I stop enjoying the show because his writing doesn't agree with me. Clean sheet, clean mind. Bring on S5!

But first things first, I want an apotheosis for Ten's death. RTD *has* to make me cry once more, for old times' sake. ;)

My trust in Steven Moffat is extremely limited; I have rather huge problems with the way he portrays the Doctor in his episodes,

I actually like Steven Moffat as a writer - if you look at his episodes as pure stand-alone stories, they've very strong, very interesting, and go in very different places. The problem is that nestled into a larger season which is ruled by a story arc, the episodes aren't meant to work as stand-alones - and so they stick out like sore thumbs, with Girl in the Fireplace and the whole River Song saga being the most egregious.

What intrigues me about Moffat is that he does take the Doctor in such interesting, unusual places. And I'm curious what he'd do with a whole season to play with.

But I'm also convinced that the reason DT left is because he doesn't want to be part of Moffat's grand scheme.

Russell takes his toys along with him and ensures no-one can break them. And he's probably the only one I trust to give Ten the spectacular ending he deserves.I hear he already knows the last line of the last ( ... )

I like *some* of Moffat's episodes as stand-alones. Blink, for example, was fantastic as a mini-film. I thought Sally Sparrow was a very interesting character and I was on the end of my seat throughout. I had much bigger problems with Girl in the Fireplace and the whole River Song thing (and not just because of River Song, though I didn't take on her as a character at all, but mostly because it was an episode that was supposed to be frightening and I didn't shiver once)

And you're right, the question is whether he can deal with the continuity in an entire series of episodes. I thought Russell had a brilliant feel for continuity (not to say I like all of his episodes - the S3 finale, for example, left me cold - but he usually doesn't disappoint me) I'm hoping that Moffat can surprise me. :)

We'll see how it goes. Like I told Wendy, I'm approaching S5 with a much lighter heart now. Fresh actor, fresh lead writer, so I don't have to be disappointed or infuriated or anything. :)

I hear he already knows the last line of the last show, ( ... )
