This is one of the most powerful episodes of DW I've ever seen, and the Doctor was barely in it! I think they've finally figured out how to do Doctor-lite, and it's been done in a way that makes it essential to continuity, as opposed to previous years where you could skip the episode and miss nothing.
This was the Companions' Episode - all of them, not just Donna and Rose. Even though we didn't see them, it was Martha's and Sarah-Jane's and Jack's time to shine, to stand up and be the Doctor. It was Donna's showcase above all, but all of them mattered. All of them counted. And all of them were heroes. Brilliant. Just inspired.
And... Damn, I think I have to add this to my own commentary.

I, too, was dreading Rose's return. Too much expectation meant I had every chance to be disappointed. So far I'm still squeeing because her return didn't dampen my enthusiasm, but I guess I won't breathe in relief until I see the very first scene between her and the Doctor.
Like, you, I think I trust RTD.
