I'm constantly amazed by parent-customers at our bookstore who weeble about their teenagers reading books with things that happen in them. Don't want their kid to read a book where the character deals with a parent's death, or any sex, or references to drugs, or romantic relationships.
What do they think reading is for? Books are where you want your kid to be exposed to things they'll have to deal with, and they're going to be dealing with all of these things earlier than parents will ever want them to.
All the better if that reading is for English class, where discussions will bring the complexities and the empathy out into the light.
