trying hard not to smile though i feel bad

They're looking for food, this time--Noatak had mentioned a dish from his childhood, and Lu Ten had never tried it. As he opens the door, hoping for a kitchen or a restaurant or the like, Noatak wonders when they had started looking for other things besides just a way back to Republic City. And he wonders if their...friendship could have been like ( Read more... )

"I've taken it up as a hobby."

"No. No one I spent as much time with." He smiles faintly as he rubs at a familiar rough spot on the table. "It was a risk to come here as often as I did, nonetheless." Even with a hoarse whisper of a voice and carefully slumped shoulders. Even at odd times, long after Tarrlok would be out to eat.

It's been a very long time since he's hugged anyone, or been hugged--the last time was before he took up a new face, a new name. From the slightly crazed grin on Lu Ten's face, he guesses it's been some time for him as well.

He wonders--when was the last time Lu Ten had a lover?

Before they can stare at each other any longer, Noatak steps forward and gingerly takes Lu Ten in his arms, keeping a proper distance between them.

There.

"Hey, we all need to get out sometimes. Especially if the grub's as good as you say." After the... other room, there's probably not much point asking if Noatak had-- "Any civilian friends?" Whoops dammit. At least here he doesn't have to answer if he doesn't want to.

This is just his face, okay? And he's a little - jittery - about hugging Noatak, if he's honest with himself. But that gets pretty annoying, especially lately.

Looks like someone should've paid more attention to the Lieutenant's meme.

Alright, so he hasn't really hugged much of anyone since ma died. But she - and much of his extended family - taught him how to hug the right way. Squeezing Noatak tightly against his chest, he gives him a few spirited thumps on the back for good measure.

Nooooooooo

There isn't much Noatak wouldn't answer, if Lu Ten asked him. "No. A few acquaintances, maybe." Including the proprIetor of this shop. He doubts an accurate enough description of his face will circulate, that she'll piece together what happened to the odd, quiet customer she always tried to draw into conversation.

Someone was distracted by the hilarity of his name.

He stiffens instinctually. He's looking for an advantage, listen to his bloodflow to tell whether he'll feint to the side, trap his arms to--

No.

Lu Ten is just hugging him.

And somehow, Noatak finds himself hugging him just as hard.

A lot of Equalists were like that - even himself, to a certain extent. People who kept to themselves, or fell through the cracks in society... their leader had that in common with them, at least. "Must get pretty lonely," he murmurs before he can stop himself- "Uh, sorry. Don't mean to... pry."

...just go back to speculating on his love life, would you?

That's more like it. Lu Ten lets go of Noatak while he still can, sits down again-- Huh. Their food's arrived.

"Remind me not to get a refill," he snickers, before taking a small sip of tea.

"It wasn't," he says softly, eyes meeting Lu Ten's.

There's plenty of time for both.

Noatak smiles at him, a little dazed. He needed that, more than he wants to admit. "There are worse rooms, I've heard," he says, taking a small sip of his own tea. "You know, I can't imagine your features as very feminine." He may be hiding a smile in his teacup.
