Required "showing your work" is one of my big pet-peeves with math education. While I can understand it on homework, where you're supposed to be learning and they're supposed to be making sure you learn it correctly, the test is to make sure you can get the right answer. If you can get the right answer without showing your work (especially if the test has a time limit), grading you off for doing it in your head it stupid. Bah humbug.
Not in high school, when I first encountered this travesty of grading. It went along with the whole group work and integrated math and all that crap. It sucks for anyone who does any kind of math in their head, or does anything in a non-standard way. Though that doesn't preclude it being the reasoning for your teachers. Seems to me that they should just keep better tabs on the class if they're worried about cheating. Meh. It's like DRM on music and computer games. you're punishing the honest people in order to deter the dishonest people, who will probably find a way around the protections anyway.
