I'd be sad to see Slayerfest go, though I can't say that I've been much help in large-scale attendance in the past, and I'm probably going to be in NY for at least most of Memorial Day weekend again this year. Ideas for shaking it up? I've thought about doing something Gilmore, or you could do something V Mars, if you wanted to stay TV-oriented. If you did something like Battlestar Galactica or Gilmore Girls, that at least a chunk of your friends know well, it could take some of the burden off you and be more collaborative, allowing you to actually participate in the games. For example, I now own Seasons 1, 3, and 4 of GG on DVD, and would be happy to pitch in. Or do you want it to be Whedon-centric? If you wanted to stick with something Buffy/Angel, what about incorporating the comic/g-novels and maybe changing the format (e.g. instead of one wall-to-wall weekend, what about a combination of in-person and decentralized events over a week or month, so that you could get some of your non-Denver Whedon group involved)?
Don't you hate it when I reply to my own comments? To expand, Gilmore offers a wealth of outside connections to draw on because of their broad cultural references. We could even incorporate other projects the cast has been involved in, either to break up the format (offer "events" appropriate for gathering, like showings of "Bad Santa" or a Bledel movie) or to make trivia more involved.
I think a change-up for Slayerfest is probably a good idea; it seems like the format isn't as good a match for people's lives as it used to be.
I don't have any specific suggestions, other than to figure out what aspects of it you enjoy the most and redesign it around those. Maybe it's watching lots of Buffy; maybe it's introducing people to good TV; maybe it's having lots of people in your house; maybe it's staked food and trivia games. Figure out what parts you like best, and the rest should follow.
